If a professor announces a new assignment and tells the class that you're all going to have to choose a topic to write about, you may feel lost and wish they just gave you a list of choices. We're used to standardized tasks in academic settings where we're told what to do, so when it's up to us to decide, we often have questions we're curious about.   • It's not safe to choose offbeat topics for the fun of it, because the more unusual the topic is, the harder it will be for you to find sources.
  • Make sure that all the resources on the topic can be accessed. Decide on the topic, find sources, and then start writing afterwards. Choose another topic if not many resources are available. Remember, all these resources should be put as citation and in bibliography.
  • Brainstorm the ideas for your paper topic if there are few or no sources. If you think you can't come up with any topic, it's an effective method.
  • Choosing a boring topic because writing is easy. To be bored with the topic is to compose a dull research paper.
  • Not to narrow down a topic and try to write a paper on a topic which seems difficult.
  • Try to recycle a previous topic, but write the assignment using it from a different perspective after doing thorough research.
