Planning to use references for your assignment?

Have an idea of how to use them?

In this blog, we will discuss the ways through which you can make use of references in your assignment.

But before that, let us first understand the need for references in your assignment.

References are used to add a possible source of your content to your assignment. It enhances the reliability of a reader upon your work. There are many sources from which you can abstract information for your content.

You can extract information from a website or an article or a book or a newspaper.

Is it legal to use references?

Yes, it is completely legal to use references from other sources. You must keep in mind to add the name of the author and its source against the information extracted. It would amount to a breach of intellectual property rights if you use any information from an original work without obtaining the consent of the author. Therefore, it is very important to follow the appropriate referencing style before using someone else's work.

How will references benefit the reader of your assignment?

An assignment becomes attractive only when the content included in it is genuine. Thus, adding references in your assignment enhances the genuinity of the information in your assignment.

Are footnotes and references the same thing?

However, you should not be confused between using footnotes and references in your assignment. A footnote is only used to explain to the reader a detailed meaning of the statement in your assignment.

What are the ways from where you can source the possible references?

Copying from an original work is a crime. Therefore, you must incorporate adequate means in order to source the references. References must be sourced in one of the following two ways:

In-cite references:

You can add references to your assignment by using the in-cite references. While using any reference from a given source, add the name of the author and its source after the end of the statement within a paragraph. Make sure to write the name of the author in Italics format.

If you are including direct references, keep in mind to add the page number. If the double quotations used by you are less than 40 words, add the statement within double quotation marks.

If you are including direct quotations having more than 40 words, keep in mind to include it in a separate paragraph.

Reference List:

The reference list is to be included at the end of your assignment. It contains the list of all the sources from where your information has been extracted.

While using the reference list, keep in mind the following things:

Arrange all the sources in chronological order as per the name of the author.

Or,

Arrange all the sources in chronological order as per their date of publication.

While adding the reference list, keep in mind to start it from a fresh page in your assignment. Make sure that you have included all the sources from where the information has been retrieved. Give the title “References” to your reference list.

There are many sources from which you can retrieve information for your assignment. These sources are mentioned below:

From a book:

It may so happen that you are in need to copy a quotation from a book. Keep in mind to include the name of the author followed by the name of its author. It would be much better if you also give information about its publication date.

If you are sourcing any information from a book containing articles from many authors, you have to include the name of its editor rather than the name of the author.

From a newspaper:

You can also take references from a newspaper. If you wish to do so, keep in mind to include the name of the newspaper, its publication date, and the name of its editor in your assignment.

From a journal:

You can also retrieve information from a journal. Keep in mind to include the name of the journal and its editor in your assignment.

From a website:

There is a lot of information that you can retrieve from a website. However, the websites are updated frequently as and when required. Therefore, it is very important to add the name of the website as well as the date on which the information was sourced.
