“The University of Warwick” is a public research university in the environs of Coventry between the West Midlands and Warwickshire, England.
The government approved the foundation of the University of Warwick in 1961, and it obtained its “Royal Charter of Incorporation” in 1965. Since then, the university has merged with the former Coventry College of Education in 1979 and has lengthened its land holdings by continuously purchasing its bordering farmland.
The university also surfaced from a significant donation from the family of John 'Martin, a Coventry businessman who hit the big time from investment in Smirnoff vodka, and which aided the construction of the “Warwick Arts Centre."
The university, in the beginning, registered a small intake of graduate students in 1964 and took its first 450+ undergraduates in October 1965. Since its foundation, Warwick has extended its grounds to 2.90sq. km., with many modernized buildings and academic amenities. In the 1960s and 70s, Warwick was a politically extremist institution.
Warwick was the 1st U.K. university to embrace a business approach to higher education, develop close connections with the business community, and exploit the commercial aspect of its research.
In October 2013, the student inhabitants were 23,000+ of which 9,770+ are postgraduates. Around 1/3rd of the student body istransoceanic, and students from 120+ countries are embodied on the campus.
Warwick's alumni and staff comprise winners of the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, Fields Medal, Emmy Award, Grammy, and the Padma Vibhushan, and are fellows to the British Academy, the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Academy of Engineering& the Royal Society.
Researchers at The University of Warwick have also made substantial contributions such as the development of penicillin, music therapy, Second-wave feminism, computing standards, including I.S.O., and E.C.M.A., complexity theory, contract theory& the International Political Economy as a field of study.
Warwick is mapped on the environs of Coventry, 5.50 km southwest of the city center, and not in the town of Warwick as its name reflects. The university's main site comprises 3adjoining campuses, all within walking distance of each other. The university also possesses a site in Wellesbourne, procured in 2004 when it amalgamated with Horticulture Research International.
