Constraints refer to anything that is inhibiting any organization or an agency in achieving its objective or the goal. There can different constraints for different organizations and that may be physical like: facilities, materials, equipments and the people or related to policies like – regulations, rules, laws or the ways of doing business. The management of any constraint becomes easier, when it is differentiated or classified under correct type.
There are mainly seven types of constraints
a. Material – In order to satisfy the requirement of the products or the services, the material or the goods are provided in correct quantity as well as the quality.
b. Resources – The various resources act as constraints in their availability like people, equipments etc.
c. Finances – In order to expand the business, the monetary or the financial side remains low and hence there is not enough money to take the business forward.
d. Supplier – In case there is no supplier or vendor available and even the time taken for supply is more then also there can be constraint situation.
e. Competence – The people who are working in the organization do not have the necessary skills or the competence to implement the processes as well as the changes.
f. Market – The demand for the products or the services is not much in the market. Market presence and capture is utmost essential for constraints removal.
g. Policy – There can be certain policy or regulation that may inhibit the continuous working towards the business objectives. These regulation or the rules may sometimes
prove to be beneficial constraints or other times be non-beneficial constraints.
It is quite essential that once a new product or a service is been launched in the market by any company than in order to create its customers or the preferred market, all theconditions or the types of constraints that may arise in the successful implementation should be firstly checked in order to make the launch successful and efficient. Constraints are being managed and all the team leaders or the managers are being given the responsibility of ensuring that all the processes and procedures run smoothly without much hurdles or constraints.
a. Identify – It is essential to firstly identify the various constraints or the hurdles arising out of the various situations. Once the problem is identified or figured out then onlysome solution could be obtained. The real constraints can only be removed easily when identified properly with precision and pro-active approach.
b. Exploit – The constraints need to be exploited and their solutions have to be derived.
c. Subordinate – After taking decision on how to do the exploitation of the constraints, subordination has to be done.
d. Elevate – Find out other alternative ways of elevating the change.
e. Go Back to step 1 – Once we have found out the solutions to the elimination of the various constraints, we need to go back to the initial stage of finding out the constraints as at every step new and different kind of constraints can arise.
