Your Assignment: Learn how and be able to import an Excel CSV file into Cognos Insight

Learning Objectives:

1. “Easy steps” on the way to being able to do more with Cognos Insight in software assignments #2 and #3 and in your group project; i.e., you can’t do anything unless you have accessed the software via Citrix (which we’ve already seen in the Week 1 material), downloaded the appropriate files from Blackboard (which we’ve also seen in Week 1), and then successfully loaded the CSV file into Cognos Insight – as you will do in this first exercise.

2. By following these instructions and also studying the structure and layout file that you upload, you will be guided as to how to structure the Excel file that you will need to create and load for your class exercise.

You will:

1) Use the Cognos Insight Version 10.2.0 Tutorial that is posted on Blackboard. Make sure that you download the tutorial and follow the instructions in lecture slides 1-4 for what to do with the tutorial and the supporting files.

2) Follow steps 1 through 6 on Page 3 (Chapter 2. Importing Data). Important: in Step 3 where it says you are looking for the file called “Orders.csv” you actually want “Orders_EN.csv” that is posted on Blackboard and which you will download (“EN” = English; the IBM tutorial is set up to work in a number of different languages.)

3) Take a screen shot of your computer screen after you have finished Step #6

4) Paste the screen shot into a Word or PowerPoint file

5) Upload your Word or PowerPoint file into Blackboard as directed above

6) As you exit Cognos Insight after completing your exercise, you can either SAVE or not save your work. I would recommend not saving, but no problem if you do
