ERROR CONTROL CODES
Data transmission from one device to another device with complete accuracy and reliability, over the both reliable and unreliable communication channels, is the main requirement of any communication system. An error/noise can be introduced anytime within any bit stream transmitted as shown below:These errors can be detected and corrected using Error Control coding. Error detection can done using the various detection methods like:(i) Repeating the code several times i.e. Repetition codes(ii) Including Parity/Check bits(iii) Adding Hash functions(iv) Applying Checksums (v) Adding non-secure hash functions or Cyclic redundancy check functionsTypes of Error Control Codes1. Feedback/Backward Error Control: In this method an error detection code is used to check the reliability. A feedback in the form of positive/negative acknowledgement is sent back to the sender. It requires a back channel as well for retransmission. Thus it is known as backward error control. It is also known as Automatic Repeat Request or query (ARQ). A particular data packet is re-transmitted again by the system if it does not receive the acknowledgement within the specified timeout (ensuring reliability).
