Directions: Write a Summary of your responses to the questions in 1 full page. Published in 1987, Presumed Innocent (Movie) was revolutionary in that it created the genre of the "legal thriller", later built upon by authors such as John Grisham, Richard North Patterson and many others. Despite the time that has passed since its publication, Presumed Innocent remains one of the finest examples of the genre. The novel was made into a critically acclaimed motion picture in 1990, starring Harrison Ford. Presumed Innocent raises important questions of morality, truth and justice, which serve as an excellent backdrop to this course. With this in mind, please consider the following. The phrase "presumed innocent" refers to the bedrock principal in the U.S. criminal law system that an accused is considered innocent until actually proven guilty. Why is the concept of presumed innocence important? Is it necessary? Do we actually believe in this concept? Said another way, when a person is accused of a crime, does the public really believe in the innocence of the accused? What does this say about us as a society? Conflicts of interest play a huge role in the novel. What are the conflicts and why are they important? Are conflicts of interest legally important in business transactions? Give me some examples of conflicts that you have seen in your business of education as a teacher and how they were addressed? How should such conflicts be resolved? Is simple disclosure enough? What rules are or should be in place to govern conflicts?

Presumed Innocent means that the accused who gets arrested is considered to be innocent till he is being proven guilty. This concept is really important as unless one is proved of his guilt how any law can punish that person. Sometimes, people get trapped and arrested even when they have not committed any crime. In this case if this concept will not exist then that person will have bad image in society. Although when a person is accused of some act and gets arrested, the society starts developing ill feelings about him yet when the charges are not proved then his image improves. It is necessary that unless the guilty of a person is not proved, he should be presumed innocent.

Conflicts of Interests play a huge role in this novel. Rusty who is a prosecutor and a married man faces the conflicts of interest in this novel as he had affair with his colleague Carolyn. Carolyn was found raped and murdered in her apartments. When Rusty finds Carolyn was of little use for getting advanced in his career, she was dumped. After that he makes up with his wife, Barbara but remains still obsessed with Carolyn. Hence in this case conflicts of interest exist as although Rusty patches up with his wife yet he was still obsessed with Carolyn (Kassin, 2005).
