State the primary trigger for development of celiac disease, and describe the pathophysiology of the disease.
Celiac disease is caused by an abnormal reaction to immune system of an individual for the gluten protein that is mainly found in foods such as bread, pasta, cereals and biscuits. In addition to this, some people also develops this disease due to eating of oats. Celiac disease is an example of autoimmune disease in which the immune system of an individual mistakes healthy cells and substances harmful for the body (Celiac Disease Health Center, 2005). This causes the immune system to produce antibodies against the healthy cells or substances. The substances make of gluten trigger the development of antibodies that causes the surface of the intestine to become inflamed. The inflammation of small intestine reduces the ability of intestine to digest the food. Thus, small intestine is not able to digest nutrients that lead to diarrhoea, anaemia and fatigue (Anderson, 2014).
