Expanded ACSR is used when a single conductor rather than a conductor bundle is used at EHV voltage levels. Expanded ACSR is specially fabricated to have a larger outside diameter than could be achieved using the circular mil area of aluminum required. Expansion is achieved by the use of oversized wires widely spaced in successive wire layers near the core. Expansion has also been achieved by the use of extruded metal shapes and various rope, paper or jute fillers. Expanded conductors can offer improved sag characteristics as well as efficient design. Because of the precise fabrication techniques required to manufacture expanded conductors and a history of installation problems, these conductors have not been widely used.
