For the second essay you were going to do a report on a practical exercise with your students: trying to teach them maths in your first language (Samoan) and talking to them about what it was like to learn in your first language (Samoan) rather than in English. This could also just be talking to some of your language learners about learning maths and reporting on what they say is easy/hard about it and what role language plays in this. This essay is about 2000 words long but not restricted to this length. You may use these readings from the first essay to help you as well. Due on the 19th November 2014. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… This is actually the essay topic. What I did was to collect some evidence from the students so I prepared a questionnaire. I have attached copies of the questionnaire from students in year 11 &12. I have also attached a different questionnaire from year 13. At first I just put questions on the board for the year 13. I did not really think of some good questions to ask. But after collecting and read through their answers I finally realised that I needed to make a proper one. So the better one was given to the year 11 and year 12. These are only a few but more was given and few came back. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………. I would like to let you know about the students here. In year 13, Rebecca is the more capable of all the others. She came from home on scholarship and was here for about 4years. A hard working student in all subject areas and she is bilingual as well. Theresa in year 13 has been in the country for a very long time. She is bilingual but maths is not her favourite subject and I am not sure why. Perry arrived two years ago from Samoa whereas Taui only arrived mid 2013. Pama was here for about 3-4 years. All 3 students struggled with maths because of the language. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………. For year 12: Flora is a NZ born half Samoan half Niue. She is bilingual. Velia came from Samoa about 3years ago. Her English have improved a lot and she can understand some parts of maths but when the language gets harder and harder, she often comes around to ask me for help. Vii and Joyce only arrived recently. They are very capable but the language has been their challenges in the learning of maths. Back in the island the teaching of maths is done mainly in their first language except for terms that cannot be translated in their language then those terms remain unchanged. For year 11: All 3 students arrived in 2012 & 2013. They all experienced the same problem as the other learners. How I helped them to understand maths well.?? I will look at any problems they bring with them and then translate first in their first language Terms they are unfamiliar with, I will try to explain in a sentence or more. There is no Samoan mathematics dictionary so students are unable to look up for any translation. A teacher must explain in few sentences so students can get their meanings. Sometimes I use examples from their environment back home. I have to bring in their culture as well and this really helps them to understand better.
