Question Preview:

Analysis the usability and accessibility of audio-visual appliances with which you are familiar using a set of usability and accessibility criteria selected from those described in lectures. You should discuss things like the interface of the various devices, both hardware and software. I am thinking of things like Bluray  and DVD players, PVRs, cable boxes, audio systems etc.

Then describe how you would re-design the watching/listening experience to be more usable and accessible for people. Include illustrations where necessary and use your experience of other systems to inform your analysis. For the purposes of your redesign you can assume ideal conditions.

I will be expecting you to demonstrate your understanding of the principles behind designing usable and accessible systems and to show some original thinking in the re-design that you suggest. A good answer will be anywhere between 1500 and 4000 words and please use as many images/diagrams as necessary to illustrate your points.

Marking

To get best marks make sure that your essay is well presented and properly proofread. I will be looking for you to demonstrate that you understand the principles you are applying both for analysis and for design. Note that the redesign part is as important as the analysis part, so do not skimp on that part. Working to something like a 60%/40% split of effort for Analysis/Design would be appropriate (I will discuss this in class). Please do NOT mix the analysis section with the design section, keep them separate as otherwise it becomes difficult to mark the work.
